Field Trips

Sweetwater Wetlands Park

Saturday, May 12, 2018, 8:00 am – 12:00 pm

img95035111313048457.jpgOur first May field trip will be to Sweetwater Wetlands Park guided by one of their park rangers and by Rebecca Smith of OVAS.

Sweetwater Wetlands is an excellent area to get some great photos of water birds up close. It’s smaller than Orlando Wetlands Park and the birds and wildlife are
quite used to seeing visitors. You can expect to see shorebirds, wading birds, bitterns, whistling ducks, Purple Gallinule, etc. Not to mention butterflies around the perimeter of the impoundments.

Carpool options may be available from North or South Lake county if interested.
Binoculars, camera, hiking boots, and a packed lunch are recommended. Hope to see you there!

Suggested Donation: $10/adult (members) or $15/adult (non-members); does not include a $5 per car entry fee to the park.

Meet at 325 SW Williston Rd., Gainesville, FL 32601

Green Mountain Scenic Overlook: Mothing Night with Tom Palmer
Thursday, May 24, 2018, 8:00 pm – 11:00 pm

Want to learn more about moths? Join us for a nocturnal field trip to Green Mountain Scenic Overlook and Trailhead for a mothing session with lepidopterist, Tom Palmer!

Audubon traditionally hosts several butterfly walks and tours, but their nocturnal relatives rarely ever get the attention they deserve. You may be surprised by the biodiversity, coloration, behaviors, shapes, and sizes that moths display – from the well-known large Saturniid moths to the intricate patterns of our Geometrid moths. We will be setting up a white sheet and lights to attract moths, beetles, and other insects that can be photographed and identified. It’s sure to be a fun evening, so sign up soon!
No or limited walking will be involved with this field trip. We recommend bringing a snack/drink, camera, bug spray, long clothing and/or mosquito netting.

Suggested Donation: $10/adult (members) or $15/adult (nonmembers)
Meet in the main parking area, 20700 County Rd 455, Minneola, FL 34715
