Field Trip – Little Big Econ State Forest

June 8, 2019 @ 7:30 am - 12:30 pm

What: An easy to moderate hike, of up to 3 miles

Where: Little Big Econ State Forest

Date and Time: Saturday, June 8, 2019, 7:30a-12:30p

Lorne Malo, a knowledgeable and experienced guide, will lead this combination birding, botany, and butterfly hike into the Little Big Econ State Forest. The hike will take the group through pastureland, sandhills and flatwoods and holds out the possibility of seeing a wide variety of birds—including Bachman’s Sparrows, Brown-headed Nuthatches, Redcockaded Woodpeckers and Eastern Meadowlarks. Past butterfly surveys have identified Cloudywings, Ceranus Blue, Southern Pearleye, Checkered White and Pipevine Swallowtails. Many different wildflowers are possible too.

The Little Big Econ State Forest flanks the Econlockhatchee River. There are more than 5,000 acres of upland and cypress swamps with tall bluffs and river tributaries.

The hike of up to three miles is rated at easy to moderate. Remember to bring a bag lunch, water, hat, sunscreen, bug spray, binoculars and camera. Please wear close-toe shoes.
